The opening day of the 7th Tallinn Digital Summit (TDS) focused on security and cyber innovation. Representatives from nations, international organisations, and businesses agreed that cooperation is more crucial than ever. ‘
“On the thousandth day of the full-scale war in Ukraine, discussing the security of our digital future is more relevant than ever. Just as in the battlefield in Ukraine, the struggle between democracy and autocracy is unfolding in the realm of technology. It is our task to demonstrate that technologies can and should be used for democratic and not for autocratic purposes,” said Prime Minister Kristen Michal in his opening address. The Prime Minister urged participants: “To build strong relationships, we need to pursue digital solidarity – sharing information and supporting each other with digital tools in times of need. Let’s not just collaborate, let’s build together”.
Harry Coker, the United States National Cyber Director, echoed this call in his speech: “Let us recognize that the strength of our digital future depends on our ability to act together. The threats we face are real, immediate, and evolving—whether it’s persistent cyberattacks on our global infrastructure or the manipulation of information to sow discord. These challenges demand a collective response.”
The day also featured the presentation of the OECD’s new Digital Economy Outlook. According to the OECD report, Estonia is performing well in digital innovation. It leads OECD countries in the proportion of investments allocated to the ICT sector—8.7% in 2022. Nearly half of all Estonian companies are start-ups. While Estonia’s digital strategy was rated positively overall, the OECD highlighted the need for greater focus on labour market policies.
The Tallinn Digital Summit is an annual event hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister. It gathers policymakers, high-level representatives from influential international organisations, and private sector leaders. The programme features presentations and discussions on security, international cooperation, cybersecurity, and secure innovation.
